Lacey Chabert recently starred in the comedy flick Ghosts of Girlfriends Past as the crazy but sweet bride who’s about to marry Matthew McConaughey’s brother. But the girl isn’t only funny and a great actress – she’s got great style too! It was of absolute importance therefore that we get hold of her for a chat.
17: Where did you grow up?
Lacey Chabert (LC): I was born in Mississippi and lived in New York from ages 7 to 11. Then from age 11 to present I've lived in Los Angeles.
17: Were you a good student? Did you like school?
LC: Yes, I loved school. But when I started Party of Five in the fifth grade, I was taken out of school and tutored on the set.
17: What was the worst popular trend when you were going to school?
LC: I had Doc Martens in every colour, including patent leather and shiny silver. I would also wear boys' ties.
17: What did you want to be when you grew up?
LC: I always wanted to entertain. When I was little, I would sing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush or my sisters and I would make shows. I always wanted to be on TV.
17: What was your after-school job?
LC: When I was growing up I always wanted to be a waitress. My sister opened a restaurant in Mississippi and I went down there and was a waitress for a few days. Let me tell you, I got it out of my system.
17: What was your style when you were 17? Now?
LC: I used to always want to wear my hair straight, flat and dark as possible. Ripped jeans and a tight shirt. I thought that I had to show off parts of my body to be sexy. Now I'm 26 and I feel more comfortable in my skin. I have a very feminine style now.
17: What kind of clique were you in back then? Now?
LC: I was always in an artsy kind of clique. Being on TV was kind of abnormal, so it was definitely isolating at times. A lot of my friends now aren't in the industry.
17: What nicknames did you have back then? Now?
LC: My family has always called me "Lay Lay," and my dad used to always call me "Dynamite Termite" because I was really short and small and I hated to be still. I would never stop.
17: Who was your best friend? Is she still your best friend now?
LC: My sisters were always my best friends, and we are as close now as we were then.
17: What did you worry about back then? Now?
LC: Back then I would dream about having a boyfriend, now I do have a boyfriend. I would dream about wanting to drive somewhere and do what I want, and now I can. Good advice would be to slow down. It will all come in time. There's no need to rush anything.
17: Who was your celebrity crush? Now?
LC: Leonardo DiCaprio was my crush then. When I was 14, I did Lost in Space, and I was in the Four Seasons hotel. I walked into the elevator, and he was standing there. I was speechless. He got out of the elevator, and I burst into tears.
17: What advice did your parents give you when you were 17. Now?
LC: My parents always told me to stay true to yourself and honour your character.
17: What advice would you give your 17-year-old self?
LC: Stop worrying that you don't have perfect hair and that you're only 5'2" (1.57m) and won't get an inch taller. Enjoy every moment and stop feeling that things aren't exactly how you want them to be: it isn't your fault. Relax and be grateful for what you have. You're meant to be the way you are.
