The most important thing in a relationship is friendship. If you guys haven't become friends first then I don't know how you can be in a relationship. So what I recommend is being friends with the guy first and start asking him questions until you get a sense of what he feels. Guys are easy to manipulate if you manage to hint your way to the answer you want. Point out girls of your race and ask him if he thinks they are good looking and then ask if he'd date them. Then ask for the other race and see if there's a difference in his answers.
