My ex told his friend how cute and pretty I am, but a few days later he told me how ugly and fat I am. It really hurt my feelings and affected my self-esteem. Why would he do that?
Don't listen to a thing he says. It's obvious that when you broke up, his ego was slightly dented, so he is getting back at you by saying mean and nasty things! What he told his friend was most probably what he is really thinking and feeling, but he's never going to admit that to you. He is acting immature, which is the best thing for you, you can see his true colours and get over this guy that you once dated. Don't let his insecurities affect you – you're beautiful!
