New home, new family.
Wow! Wow! Wow! What an adventerous time this has been. In just three weeks (and a little bit) I have made enough memories to last me more than one lifetime. Let me explain. . .
Moving into IRENE (Yes, the best ladies res on Stellenbosch Campus) was probably not as difficult for me as it was for a lot of girls that moved away from home. And even if any of the first years arrived with a little sadness in their hearts, it was quickly washed away by a warm welcome from our beautiful (and oh-so intelligent) Huiskomittee.
Our welcoming period, which lasted for about two weeks, consisted of various activities which integrated social, academic and emotional aspects of varsity life and adapting to these new circumstances. Our House committee even incorporated each of Irene’s values into our activities. Integrity, respect, unity, humility and enthusiasm were instilled in each of us and living by them will truly make us ladies with style.
Many of you remember JOOL and RAG, but it has now changed to MAD2: Making a decision to make a difference,, and that is exactly what we were taught to do. We partnered with men’s residence, Huis Marais, for the duration of MAD2 and I can surely say that I have made a few good friends whilst singing to patients at the local hospice and of course during countless Vensters rehearsals.
My first week of classes started on the 6th of February and to my own amazement, I did not get lost once! (I might have taken a sneak at my campus map but I refused to look like a first year!) Two days after I celebrated my first birthday away from my family and of course it was not the same but I enjoyed every moment of it with my new sisters. Strong bonds have formed over these past few weeks and my mom can rest assured that I’ll have tons of shoulders to cry on. ( I love you Irene ladies!)
I might be needing those shoulders soon because I’m already starting to realise that this is going to be a hectic year, but if I stay on top of my game, I will be okay. I’ve signed up for a few res-activities and just a few nights ago I was elected as one of ten girls to be ion the first-years committee. I’m super excited to be a part of organising dancess and “skakels” with the boys. Our first task however, is to create awareness about Early Assessment - a period in which we write tests to see whether wer will be able to cope with the course we enrolled for.
So keep your fingers crossed for me because it’s almost test time. And remember, work hard, have fun and never ever change who you are!
